What I Worked On
From our 19-person team, I was 1 of 3 apprentices old enough to go to the very top of the scaffolding. From this, I got to have a heavy hand in executing the top 3-4 rows of the mural!
Anything from the middle of the windows and up, I got to work on with 4 other apprentices. This includes the sky, heads, upper bodies, arms, and stadium. I got to grid, draw, correct, and color for the entire upper half. In this, I also got to mix a few colors.
For the arms of the woman in the green shirt, we were granted permission to give them more structure because when the design was printed, they became swollen and misshapen. This was fun to draw something huge up close and then correct it from down on the ground.
I was also nominated for the Biggie Award! Each mural team selects a team member to be up for the award based on work and teamwork. I was very grateful to be chosen for our team's nomination!
Our Process
Our process was extremely silly. We had lots of fun in between looking at bugs, free drawing on breaks, playing with a random sand hill in the lot, and random drawing games.
In the beginning, we did practice gridding. Drawing a design on a small sheet of paper and handing it over to the next person to redraw on a larger piece of paper.
We then gridded the wall with chalk lines, drew everything out, and then painted.
We had some problem-solving with the wall being slanted, as it was on a hill. We did our own measurements of the wall and mathed out how big our grid squares should be.
In between, we presented at the 21C Museum, teaching the general public about what our mural is about and our creative process!
